The island of Biševo
The little island of Biševo is a true pearl of the Mediterranean, located only 5 nautical miles from Komiža on the island of Vis. The locals always joke that you can practically reach it by swimming. Biševo doesn’t have hotels, but you can stay in a few private accommodations. There are not many restaurants on the islands, however in few that you can find there, you can enjoy the most splendid Dalmatian cuisine that will surely take you back in time.
The most visited attributes of Biševo are surely its numerous caves among which the Blue cave is the most famous.
Other than the Blue Cave, one of the most famous ones is surely The Monk seal’s grotto (Medvidina cave), a mysterious cave located in the southern part of the The cave is 160 m long in total which makes it the longest sea cave in the Adriatic. The Monk seal’s grotto was named after the Mediterranean seal, the rarest species of seal, which inhabited the cave.
How to get there
Biševo is connected to the town of Komiža with a regular boat line. Komiža is easily reached from Split as there are regular ferry and catamaran lines to Vis, which is just a short bus ride from Komiža. If you find yourself on either Brač or Hvar, it is also possible to jump on a catamaran to reach Vis.
During summer months, many tourist agencies from Split, Hvar, Vis, etc. organise the tours to the Blue Cave.
If the Blue cave is on your bucket list, you might find it easier joining one of the tours, since it’s much less complicated to organise it all. Most of them include several different stops nearby, which makes the tours even more interesting and worthwhile.

The Blue cave is one of the most magical places in Croatia where nature plays in a theatrical way and creates an amazing light show in blue. It is a sea cave located on the east side of the island, it is not very deep, from 3 to 20 metres, with many underwater cracks which makes it very interesting to divers.
It has been known since ancient times, but it was only from 1884 that it has been a popular tourist attraction, once it became accessible by boat when the external entranced was breached.
The Blue Cave owes its attractive name to the reflection of the sunlight that around noon, during calm seas, penetrate through the underwater opening into the cave, reflecting off the white bottom and giving the cave a mesmerising blue colour.
It is open for sightseeing from May, but it is better to make an appointment at least 24 hours before the visit.
